On the Road to Reading works with nearly 80 local child care centers to promote early childhood literacy for approximately 1,350 children. Library staff serve the centers by providing story times, Bunny Book Bags of pre-selected books for young readers and professional development materials for caregivers.

Through regular visits from the Library’s Outreach Services in their Itty Bitty Bookmobiles, the bags and other materials are refreshed to ensure new books and topics are available for kids to enjoy. “We love the materials left behind,” one caregiver said. When surveyed, over half of child care centers shared that the children in their care used the books from the Bunny Book Bags every day. On the Road to Reading is part of the Library and Library Foundation’s ongoing work to prioritize early childhood literacy in the Indianapolis area.

On the Road to Reading is made possible by The Herbert Simon Family Foundation; The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Maurath and Old National Bank.
