On September 8, more than 225 childcare providers attended the fifth annual Readers into Leaders Early Literacy Conference in partnership with Child Care Answers at Central Library. Attendees chose from 23 different sessions and heard a keynote speech from Alvin Irby, the founder of Barbershop Books. Mr. Irby specializes in encouraging reluctant African-American boys to read.

Additional activities that day included a goat petting zoo with the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site team (who were there to promote their new book, "Old Whiskers Escapes!: A True White House Tale" by Donna Griffin), a technology petting zoo in Central Library's Learning Curve and tours of the Center for Black Literature & Culture.

The conference was made possible by the generous support of the Hoover Family Foundation.
