The Library holds a variety of cultural programs that highlight Black artists and creators. Currently, the works of many locally prominent African-American artists are on display at Central Library as part of the 30th annual Meet the Artists exhibit Shades of Pearl Showcase. Presented by the Library's African-American History Committee, the works cover a wide variety of media, from acrylic and oil to metalwork and human-sized dolls. Visitors celebrated the works during the Meet the Artists Gala Opening Reception on Saturday, February 10. Patrons could spend time with the artists and enjoy performances and activities. The gala included a presentation by Vivica A. Fox, actress and Indiana native.

On November 18, 2017, the Fall Fest program took place. Geared toward African-American youth, the program featured cartoonist Robb Armstrong, who held workshops with students and spoke about inspiration for his drawings. Students were invited to submit to a poetry contest beforehand, and Armstrong presented the winners with their prizes at the event.

These programs were supported by Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, Donna D. Talley Story Theatre Fund and Dr. Michael R. Twyman Endowment Fund.
